HEADQUARTERS 3D INFANTRY DIVISION

GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 12 - 20 JANUARY 1951

AWARD OF THE SILVER STAR. - By direction of the President under the Act of Congress approved 9 July 1918 (WD Bulletin 43, 1918) the Silver Star for gallantry in action is awarded to the following enlisted men:

First Lieutenant Cerardo Latony, 0958969, Infantry, Company "H", 65th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. On 7 November 1950, at Yonghung, Korea during an attack by a numerically superior enemy, Lieutenant Latony distinguished himself in action. When an element of the attack succeeded in driving Company "G" 65th Infantry, from their positions directly in front of Lieutenant Latony's mortar platoon, he immediately responded to the call for mortar support. He, with utter disregard for his personal safety, left his covered position, went to ground which he could effectively direct the fire of the mortars, and while exposed to enemy fire, directed the fire in such a manner that the enemy were forced to abandon their newly gained position leaving behind eleven dead, three wounded, and several prisoners. Lieutenant Latony's resourceful, inspirational heroism reflects great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the military service from Puerto Rico.
