AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named officer and enlisted men :

FIRST LIEUTENANT FLORENCIO G. VEGA, JR., 0927379, Infantry, Company "D", 65th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. On 25 April 1951, near Sisan-ni, Korea, Lieutenant VEGA'S mortar platoon was in readiness to support an impending attack by the 1st Battalion, 65th Infantry against the enemy, when the enemy launched a surprise assault which endangered the mortar platoon. Lieutenant VEGA, conducting the displacement of the mortar platoon to an advantageous position, preceeded to an exposed observation post, accompanied by his radio operator, and called for mortar fire on the enemy. Ignoring orders to move to a safer position, he continued to adjust accurate fire on the hostile force, inflicting many casualties and enabling the 1st Battalion to accomplish an organized withdrawal. The heroism, initiative, and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant VEGA reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the military service from Puerto Rico.
