GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 359 - 15 August 1951
AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL (FIRST BRONZE OAK LEAF CLUSTER)- By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named officers and men:
FIRST LIEUTENANT HECTOR E. PINEIRO, 0959121, Infantry, Company "B", 65th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. On 4 June 1951, Lieutenant PINEIRO'S platoon was leading the company in an attack against a strongly entrenched enemy force on a ridgeline near Kakhul-bong, Korea, when the company came under heavy small arms, artillery, and automatic weapons fire, followed by a fierce enemy counterattack. Ordered to withdraw his platoon and to serve as covering force for the withdrawal of the company, Lieutenant PINEIRO repeatedly exposed himself to the intense fire as he reorganized his men and supervised the evacuation of casualties. Remaining to direct the covering force until the casualties were removed to a position of safety, he then withdrew and assisted in the further evacuation of wounded to the aid station. Lieutenant PINEIRO'S heroism and aggressiveness were an inspirection to his men and reflect high credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the military service from Puerto Rico.
