HEADQUARTERS 3D INFANTRY DIVISION

GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 260  11 July 1951

AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named officers and enlisted men :

FIRST LIEUTENANT JOHN H. FLANAGAN, 01056092, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 65th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. On 26 April 1951, in the vicinity of Ilbisang-ni, Korea, enemy infiltrations of friendly lines had created a gap in the battalion perimeter, through which large numbers of hostile troops could penatrate and place in peril the entire area's defense. Lieutenant FLANAGAN, realizing the danger of the situation, personally organized a group of volunteers and led them in a fierce counterattack upon the enemy troops. Using a light machine gun, he delivered such a heavy concentration of fire that, coupled with the strength of the attack, Lieutenant FLANAGAN and his men forced the enemy to withdraw in confusion, thus reforming the battalion perimeter. The heroism and outstanding leadership exhibited by Lieutenant FLANAGAN reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the military service from the State of New York.
