    AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL  - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named enlisted men :

CORPORAL HILARIO MERCADO TORRES, RA30449015, Infantry, Company "H", 65th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. On 17 October 1950, near Singi-dong, Korea, Company "H" was attacked by a numerically superior enemy force. When his weapon was disabled, Corporal MERCADO TORRES exposed himself to heavy enemy fire in order to organize the men around him to defend their position. When one of the men was wounded, he carried the man out through the heavy fire. On the return trip he encountered an enemy force, taking nine of them prisoner. The courage and devotion to duty displayed by Corporal MERCADO TORRES reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the military service from Puerto Rico.
