GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 272  11 July 1951

AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named enlisted men :

CORPORAL JAIME L. ZAYAS, RA30405792, Infantry, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 65th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. On 26 April 1951, near Ilbisang-ni, Korea, when the 2d Battalion was attacked by an estimated enemy force of two regiments, the battalion command post was cut off and came under intense hostile small arms, automatic weapons, and mortar fire. Without hesitation, Corporal ZAYAS left his covered position and braved the fire to remove a machine gun monted on a jeep which was in an exposed position and unable to be moved. Assisted by two of his comrades, he removed the machine gun, ran to a nearby position, and, since no ground mount was available, held the barrel in his bare hands as the fire of the weapon was directed at the enemy. The outstanding heroism and initiative displayed by Corporal ZAYAS reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the military service from Puero Rico.
