GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 285  27 July 1953

AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named enlisted men:

Master Sergeant CHARLES SIEVERS, RA32793685, Armor, Tank Company, 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. On the night of 13 June and during the early morning hours of 14 June 1953, a raiding party from the 65th Infantry Regiment assaulted the enemy on Hill "412" in the vicinity of Sagimak, Korea. Sergeant SIEVERS, a tank commander, directed his tank out to a precarious position deep in enemy held territory to give supporting fire to the friendly attacking forces. Upon reaching the objective, his tank was taken under intense mortar and artillery fire. Sergeant SIEVERS remained exposed in the tank commander's hatch and gave fire commands which brought heavy and accurate shell fire on the enemy troops and fortifications. Several times, shell fragments glanced off the hull of the tank but he continued to direct operations from the open hatch. As the friendly force moved back from the hill, he moved his tank out of the valley and laid down supporting fire to cover the retrograde movement. Sergeant SIEVERS' outstanding heroism and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the Federal Service from New York.
