GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 405  16 Sept 1953

AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL  - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named enlisted men:

Private First Class ARTHUR K. DYER, RA21270956, Infantry, Heavy Mortar Company, 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. On the night of 14 July and during the early morning hours of 15 July 1953, in the vicinity of Kumhwa, Korea, a forward observer team began to direct fire for Heavy Mortar Company from "Sniper" Ridge. Private DYER,  a radio operator with the team, sucessfully relayed all fire missions until radio contact was lost with the firing platoons. After an hour of futile efforts to restore communications, Private DYER volunteered to return to the company area to check on the progress of a wire line which was to have been run to their observation post. Three hours later, after a hazerdous movement through the heavy rain and darkness, he arrived at the company's former positions only to find it had moved. He immediately started back to the observation post and succeeded in reaching the men by daybreak. The team then returned to friendly lines, traveling two miles through enemy territory. Private DYER'S outstanding heroism and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the Federal Service from Massachusetts.
