HEADQUARTERS 3D INFANTRY DIVISION

GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 295 - 29 July 1953

AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named enlisted men:

Private First Class (then Private) GEORGE WOHNSIEDLER, JR., US51190326, Armor, Tank Company, 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. During the afternoon hours of 10 June 1953, in the vicinity of Sagimak, Korea, a personnel carrier was dispatched from the main line of resistance with Private WOHNSIEDLER serving as assistant driver. Its mission was to evacuate casualties who were situated with a tank task force in an enemy valley. As the carrier was moving through the valley, Private WOHNSIEDLER, despite his constant exposure to the heavy concentrations of mortar fire which struck around the vehicle and the imminent danger of enemy land mines, courageously and skillfully gave commands of direction and offered encouragement to the driver over the extremely hazardous route. Upon reaching the tank position, he continually braved enemy fire and assisted in treating and evacuating the casualties to the personnel carrier, assuring their safe removal from the battle area. As the carrier was returning, it was again subjected to enemy mortar and artillery fire and the hazard of surrounding enemy land mines, but Private WOHNSIEDLER, who was still exposed, assured the safe return of the vehicle through his masterful direction. Private WOHNSIEDLER'S outstanding heroism and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the Federal Service from New York.
