GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 373  1 Sept 1953

AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named officer and enlisted men:

Private First Class JOHN E. RYAN, US51212472, Infantry, Company "F", 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. On the afternoon of 10 June 1953, Company "F" attacked the enemy held Hill "412" in the vicinity of Sagimak, Korea. Private RYAN, a wireman, departed from the friendly lines with the assault team. As the assault party advanced to its objective, the enemy unleashed lethal barrages of mortar fire which materially hindered the attack and destroyed the wire communications. Unable to repair the lines, Private RYAN immediately volunteered to join the assault team and offer his fire power in its raid on the hill. In the assault, he effectively hurled grenades and fired his pistol into the enemy positions, neutralizing some of the enemy fire. Upon observing that one of his comrades was wounded, Private RYAN, fully exposing himself to the enemy grenade, automatic weapons and small arms fire, ran to his aid and carried him down the hill to a point of safety. Private RYAN'S outstanding heroism and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the Federal Service from Massachusetts.
