GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 345 17 Aug 1953

AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named enlisted men:

Private First Class VIRGIL JONES, JR., RA24746888, Infantry, Company "E", 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. On the night of 14 June and during the early morning hours of 15 June 1953, Company "E" had the mission of attacking enemy outpost Hill "412" in the vicinity of Sagimak, Korea. Private JONES, manned a flame thrower with the forward assault group. As friendly elements neared the objective, they were subjected to intense enemy mortar and machine gun fire. Private JONES, with complete disregard for his personal safety, repeatedly exposed himself to the intense enemy fire to advance within close proximity of the enemy positions and employ his weapon most effectively. As he advanced, his flame thrower was struck by hand grenade fragments and redered useless. Quickly, he discarded the weapon and continued into the impact area to evacuate the seriously wounded man. Private JONES' outstanding heroism and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the Federal Service from Georgia.
