AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named enlisted men:

Private JOHN W. O'CONNOR, US51168684, Infantry, Company "E", 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. On the night of 14 June 1953, Company "E" launched an assault on the strongly fortified enemy outpost Hill "412" in the vicinity of Sagimak, Korea. Private O'CONNOR was a member of the platoon forming a section of the assault element. As they approached the objective, the platoon came under intense enemy mortar, artillery and small arms fire, and suffered heavy casualties. Although Private O'Connor was seriously wounded, he refused to be evacuated and began charging the enemy positions. Through Private O'CONNOR'S courageous action, his comrades around him were aroused to a high spirit of aggressiveness. On three occasions, he refused to be evacuated and continued in the battle until ordered to return by his company commander. While enroute to the main line of resistance, he aided in the evacuation of several seriously wounded personnel. Private O'CONNOR'S outstanding heroism and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the Federal Service from New York.
