HEADQUARTERS 3D INFANTRY DIVISION

GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 406  16 Sept 1953

AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL  - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named officer and enlisted men:

Private VEGAN GIBBS, US51198154, Infantry, Company "G", 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. During the late afternoon of 16 July 1953, in the vicinity of Kumhwa, Korea, a friendly patrol had entered a nearby anti personnel mine field and had detonated some of the mines, which wounded several men. Private GIBBS, although having collapsed twice during the day from heat exhaustion, insisted upon volunteering as a litter bearer in removing the wounded from the mine field. With complete disregard for his own safety, he courageously exposed himself to the heavy enemy fire, moving over the rugged terrain to the area. He then made two trips carrying the casualties from the stricken area. After he had accomplished his missions, he collapsed again. Private GIBBS' outstanding heroism and devotion to dury reflect great credit upon himself and the militery service. Entered the Federal Service from New York.
