PRIVATE JAMES SALAS, ER57011099, Infantry, Company "F", 65th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. On 31 March 1951, Company "F" launched an attack against well-defended enemy entrenchments on Hill 398 near Choksong-myon, Korea. While moving forward with the leading elements as a scout, Private SALAS established contact with the hostile forces and was immediately subjected to concentrated enemy fire. Joining his platoon, he moved up the hill through withering enemy fire to hurl grenades into the enemy emplacement's and lend rifle support to the assaulting elements. Private SALAS' heroic actions materially contributed to the success of the assault and reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the military service from Puerto Rico.
