GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 319  7 Aug 1953

AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named officer and enlisted men:

Sergeant (then Corporal) CARL J. FYFFE, US52203112, Army Medical Service, Medical Company, 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. During the early morning hours of 11 June 1953, the enemy forces attacked the Company "B" sector in the vicinity of Kumhwa, Korea. The intense artillery and mortar fire inflicted several casualties among the embattled friendly troops. Sergeant FYFFE immediately exposed himself to the effective enemy fire and went through the shell torn area to administer aid to a wounded comrade. He remained with the casualty in an extremely exposed area until help could be procured to evacuate the wounded man. After the casualty was evacuated to the forward aid station, he repeatedly moved out into the shell torn area to give aid and evacuate the wounded to a location where professional medical treatment could be administered. Sergeant FYFFE'S outstanding heroism and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the Federal Service from Kentucky.
