GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 354 -3 December 1952

AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named enlisted men:

Corporal NIEVES CANDELARIO RODRIGUEZ, US50103971, Infantry, Company "C", 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. In the early morning hours of 19 July 1952, Company "C", of which Corporal CANDELARIO RODRIGUEZ was a squad leader, was assigned the mission of attacking an enemy position in the vicinity of Yu-hyon, Korea. As the friendly forces were engaged in close combat, they were subjected to such a devastating and deadly barrage of mortar and artillery fire that they were forced to withdraw, Corporal CANDELARIO RODRIGUEZ volunteered to remain behind with his squad and provide his unit with covering fire. Upon rejoining his unit and finding that two wounded men remained behind in the contested area he unhesitatingly volunteered to evacuate the casualties. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he raced through the shrapnel-torn area and evacuated one wounded comrade. He again endangered his life by returning to the second wounded man and successfully evacuating him to a position of safety. Corporal CANDELARIO RODRIGEZ'S heroic and selfless actions were instrumental in saving the lives of two of his fellow soldiers and reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the Federal service from Puerto Rico.
