GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 370 - 19 December 1952

AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named enlisted men:

Private First Class AMANCIO DIAZ RIVERA, US51115461, Armor, Heavy Tank Company, 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. On 16 August 1952, a friendly jeep traveling on a road near Umjichon, Korea, was struck by intense hostile artillery fire, seriously wounding its occupants. A tank of which Private DIAZ RIVERA was a crewman, was ordered to the scene of turmoil to evacuate the casualties. Upon reaching the stricken vehicle, Private DIAZ RIVERA, ignored the fierce enemy fire as he lifted one of the wounded men into the tank. When the tank was subjected to the increasing volume of hostile fire, he was forced to withdraw with the one casualty, after placing the injured man in a position of safety, he displayed grim determination by again returning to the devastated area and, with a volunteer, he crept through the enemy fire to locate the remaining casualty. Upon reaching the wounded man, he placed him on a litter and once again braved the fierce hostile fire as he evacuated him to a position of safety. Private DIAZ RIVERA'S outstanding heroism and selfless actions were instrumental in saving the lives of two of his fellow soldiers and reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the Federal service from New York.
