HEADQUARTERS 3D INFANTRY DIVISION

GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 353 - 3 December 1952

AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named enlisted men:

Private First Class MIGUEL A. GUTIERREZ, US50103382, Infantry, Company "C", 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. On the night of 19 July 1952, Company "C" of which Private GUTIERREZ was a member was assigned the mission of assaulting an enemy position in the vicinity of Yu-hyon, Korea. As the forward elements of the friendly assault group neared their objective, they were suddenly subjected to intense enemy small arms, grenade and mortar fire. Private Gutierrez while supporting his unit with automatic rifle fire was wounded by an enemy grenade. Refusing evacuation and with complete disregard for his personal safety, he continued to move towards the enemy positions. Upon seeing for hostile soldiers waving signal flags he quickly disposed of them with murderous fire of his weapon. When the order was given to withdraw, he disregarded his painful wounds, and remained behind providing a heavy base of covering fire for the friendly unit as it withdrew. The outstanding courage and devotion to duty displayed by Private GUTIERREZ reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the Federal service from Puerto Rico.
