HEADQUARTERS 3D INFANTRY DIVISION

GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 194 - 16 June 1951

AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named enlisted men:

SERGEANT RAMON A. VEGA, ER10405315, Infantry, Company "K", 65th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. On 27 April 1951, near Hongbok, Korea, Sergeant VEGA, assistant platoon sergeant of the first platoon, covered the assault of his unit upon enemy positions with a light machine gun until his fire was masked by his own comrades. In his exposed position, Sergeant VEGA drew return fire from the enemy, and the platoon was able to advance to within a few yards of hostile positions without sustaining any casualties. He then moved the machine gun to a new position where he covered the withdrawal of an adjoining company. When elements of his own company were subjected to intense small arms and automatic weapons fire, he again led his squad to a new position and personally took over the firing of the machine gun, laying down a volume of fire which permitted the men in his sector to withdraw to a place of safety with a minimum of casualties. Sergeant VEGA'S exemplary initiative and heroism were an inspiration to members of his company and reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the military service from Puerto Rico.
