GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 194 - 16 JUNE 1951

 

AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL. - By direction of the president, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944) and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, and Department of the Army Message W89043, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following-named officers and enlisted men:

 

   CORPORAL HUGO ALVAREZ, ER30424065, Infantry, Company "F", 65th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. On 31 March 1951, near Cheksong-myon, Korea. Corporal ALVAREZ led his squad in a bayonet assault against well - defended enemy positions. When the unit was pinned down by heavy hostile fire, he voluntarily attempted to maneuver into position behind the enemy defenses but was subjected to a shower of grenades. While his commanding officer returned for reinforcements, Corporal ALVAREZ courageously fired his weapon from an exposed position and, although later wounded by grenade fragments, insisted on accompanying his comrades in a final assault on the hostile entrenchments, Corporal ALVAREZ'S heroism and determination reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the military service from Puerto Rico.
