AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL  - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named officer :

MAJOR L. CARSE, 0372147, Infantry, 65th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. On 7 November 1950, at Yonghung, Korea, the 2nd Battalion and elements of the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, Medical Company, and Mortar Companies were attacked by an estimated three thousand enemy. Major CARSE volunteered to lead the defense against the attack which required him to move frequently from unit to unit in the face of heavy enemy fire. By his inspiring leadership, superior military knowledge, and aggressivness, Major CARSE successfully cooridinated the fires of friendly units, exposing himself on numerous occasions to intense enemy small arms, grenades, and automatic weapons. This act of daring heroism undoubtedly materially assisted in the successful repulsion of the numerically superior attacking enemy force and the saving of many lives of his fellow soldiers. The actions of Major CARSE reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the military service from the State of California.
