GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 381  7 Sept 1953

AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named officer and enlisted men:

Private First Class ALFRED E. SATHER, US55279697, Infantry, Company "K", 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. During the early morning hours of 6 July 1953, in the vicinity of Honu-Chon, Korea, Company "K" commenced an attack on enemy held Hill "250". The assault platoon passed over the first sector of the hill without incident but upon entering the second sector it received fire from enemy automatic rifle positions. In the ensuing action, Private SATHER, an automatic rifleman in the first squad, was firing upon the entrenched enemy when a mortar round exploded nearby. Fragments wounded him and rendered his weapon useless. Disregarding his own injuries, he noticed a friendly casualty lying in front of an enemy machine gun bunker and immediately attempted to remove the man from the dangerous area. Despite intense automatic weapons and grenade fire, he succeeded in reaching the wounded man and quickly dragged the man to cover. Only then did he allow himself to be evacuated to the safety of friendly lines. Private SATHER'S outstanding heroism and untiring devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the Federal Service from Minnesota.
