AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named officers and enlisted men :

SERGEANT FIRST CLASS ALFREDO MALAVE, RA6674869, Infantry, Company "F", 65th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. On 31 March 1951, in the vicinity of Choksong-myon, Korea, Company "F" attacked firmly entrenched enemy defenses on Hill 398. The first platoon was assigned the mission of relieving the pressure on the leading assault elements. Nearing the objective, the platoon was subjected to heavy machine gun and grenade fire but Sergeant MALAVE, effectively deploying his squad, brought heavy fire to bear on the enemy, forcing him to withdraw to positions at the top of the hill. Exposing himself to withering fire, Sergeant MALAVE led his squad in a final assault and drove the enemy from the hill. The selfless heroism displayed by Sergeant MALAVE reflects great credit upon himself and exemplifies the high traditions of the military service. Entered the military service from Puerto Rico.
