GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 406  16 Sept 1953

AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL  - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named officer and enlisted men:

Master CLARENCE T. SEWELL, US53018241, Army Medical Service, Medical Company, 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. During the evening of 27 July 1953, in the vicinity of Chaegung-dong, Korea, the enemy commenced to shell Headquarters Company. Shortly after the barrage had begun, three members of the company were seriously wounded by shell fragments. Sergeant SEWELL, a medical aidman attached to the company immediately ran through the area under fire, obtained necessary medical equipment, and returned to the wounded men. He administered urgently needed first aid and then removed them to a safe position. As the barrage became more intense, additional men were wounded. Despite the enemy fire, Sergeant SEWELL went to the communications platoon area, treated several casualties there, and then courageously moved to the command post bunker, where three more men lay wounded. He administered medical aid to these men and evacuated them to safety. Sergeant SEWELL'S outstanding heroism and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the Federal Service from North Carolina.
