GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 507  2 December 1953

AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named enlisted men:

Sergeant JESSE J. SCHWOERBELL, RA16330471, Infantry, Company "B", 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. During the afternoon of 17 July 1953, in the vicinity of Kumhwa, Korea, a patrol element from Company "B" was pinned down near enemy lines by intense machine gun and artillery fire. Sergeant SCHWOERBELL bravely accompanied a tank moving forward of the main line of resistance in an attempt to evacuate the unit. Before reaching the trapped men, the tank exploded a mine and was disabled. Although stunned by the concussion of the blast, Sergeant SCHWOERBELL courageously continued on foot to the group despite heavy enemy fire. Upon arriving there, he immediately reorganized the men and bravely led them from the impact area. Although exhausted, he then assisted in evacuating wounded personnel to the safety of friendly lines. Sergeant SCHOERBELL'S disregard for his personal welfare and determination were instrumental in the sucessful return of the patrol members. Sergeant SCHOERBELL'S outstanding heroism and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the Federal Service from Texas.
