HEADQUARTERS 3D INFANTRY DIVISION

GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 364 - 29 August 1953

AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named enlisted men:

Private First Class FELIPE MONTANO MATOS, US50119617, Infantry, Company "C", 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. During the late afternoon of 16 July 1953, in the vicinity of Kumhwa, Korea, Private MONTANO MATOS was a member of a combat patrol advancing toward enemy lines. As the group neared the objective, it was subjected to intense concentrations of enemy mortar and artillery fire which wounded several patrol members. Private MONTANO MATOS observed a wounded comrade who had fallen on the terrain under fire and was unable to reach a sheltered position. Private MONTANO MATOS courageously rushed through the bombardment to the man and, with disregard for his personal safety, bravely carried the casualty to safety. He then returned to the impact area and further assisted in the evacuation of wounded patrol members. Private MONTANO MATOS' outstanding heroism and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the Federal Service from Puerto Rico.
