Historia geográfica, civil y natural de la isla de San Juan Bautista de Puerto-Rico, por fray Iñigo Abbad y Lasierra.

This PDF document is from 1493 to 1625.

Abbad y Lasierra, Iñigo, 1745-1813.

Created/Published

Nueva ed., anotada en la parte histórica y continuada en la estadística y económica por José Julián de Acosta y Calbo.
Puerto-Rico, Impr. y librería de Acosta, 1866.

Summary

Iñigo Abbad y Lasierra (1745-1813) was a Spanish-born Catholic priest who became secretary to the bishop of Puerto Rico in 1773 and remained on the island for ten years. Abbad's Historia, originally published in Spain, is considered the first modern historical work on Puerto Rico. It begins with the Spanish discovery and conquest of the island and ends in the late eighteenth century. Chapters twenty through forty are devoted to the study of the island's climate, economy, population, geography and natural history. Acosta's edition is an annotated and enlarged version of Abbad's work, published eighty years after the original. Acosta brought the Historia up-to-date (1866) and incorporated much new information that had not been available to Abbad. Acosta added his corrections and additions to the end of each chapter. As Acosta approached his own time, he incorporated much new historical information. He also used his annotations as a vehicle to advocate the abolition of slavery in Puerto Rico and encourage Spain to reduce Puerto Rican trade barriers.

Brau, Salvador, 1842-1912.

Created/Published

San Juan, Tip. "Heraldo Español," 1907 [cover 1908]

Summary

This is a classic study of the early period of Spanish rule in Puerto Rico, covering the years 1493-1550. This is a difficult period to research because of the dearth of sources. In this work, Brau, 1842-1912, provided the reader with valuable information on the impact of Spanish society on the native peoples of the island, and he showed considerable sympathy for their plight. Brau introduced each chapter with a summary, and his appendixes include copies of important original documents (letters, reports) for the study of the island's history.

Nueva ed. aum.
Valencia : Imprenta de F. Vives Mora, 1894.

Summary

This is the first important critical analysis of Puerto Rican historiography by a leading historian of Puerto Rico. Brau noted the limitations of earlier historical works on Puerto Rico and sought to correct the factual errors he found in them. In writing the work, Brau relied primarily on historical documents available at the Archivo General de las Indias in Spain, where he spent three years. The study discusses a wide diversity of Puerto Rican documents from the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries, which Brau uncovered at the Archivo.
